Hi! I’m Tara Prasad Sharma, a Ph.D. student in Mathematics at Texas A&M University.
Originally from Sikkim, India, I came to graduate school after several years of teaching mathematics. My academic interests include numerical analysis, scientific computing, machine learning, and mathematical approaches to problems in science and health.
Beyond research, I enjoy teaching and working with students. I believe mathematics is more than a collection of formulas—it is a way of thinking carefully about problems and communicating ideas clearly.
A Journey of Three Teachers
Looking back, three influences have shaped who I am today.
The first is nature. Growing up in the hills of Sikkim gave me an appreciation for simplicity, curiosity, and the value of quiet reflection.
The second is mathematics. Over time, mathematics became not only a subject I studied but also a way of approaching challenges with logic, patience, and persistence.
The third is Dhamma. Through the practice of Vipassana meditation, I have learned the importance of awareness, equanimity, and compassion. These lessons continue to influence both my academic work and daily life. Today, I am still learning from all three.
Currently
- Ph.D. student in Mathematics at Texas A&M University.
- Preparing for qualifying examinations in analysis and applied mathematics.
- Exploring numerical analysis, scientific computing, machine learning, and mathematical modeling.
- Teaching undergraduate mathematics.
- Trying to apply Dhamma in real life.
- Trying to balance learning, service, health, and personal growth.
Beyond academics, I find balance in nature, meaningful conversations, and staying active through sports like volleyball. I view life as a journey of continuous learning, both inside and outside the classroom.
Dhamma
I have been practicing Vipassana meditation since 2016 and have volunteered at several courses and meditation centers. The practice provides a foundation for how I approach study, teaching, work, and everyday life.
“True education is not only about intellect, but also about wisdom and character.”
A Thought I Try to Remember
- Mathematics teaches me to think clearly.
- Teaching teaches me to communicate clearly.
- Dhamma teaches me to live wisely.
May all beings be happy!
